TOM GULLION
The Spirit and the Soul of the Saxophone
"Humbly walking in the footsteps of Sonny Rollins and others who have taken time for reflection in their careers, I've found my path is to bring music to the people. And that's exactly what these new projects are about."
Saxophonist Tom Gullion brings a deep, soulful performance style, a sophisticated avant-garde sensibility, and a quicksilver technique. He started playing sax at age 10, and later studied at Indiana University under composer/conductor David Baker making his recording debut with Baker's group, the 21st Century Bebop Band. When he was 22, he was hired by jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson. Tom and his wife, a classical violinist, moved to Spain, where he recorded with the band Clunia and also provided music for movies and television. In 1995, they moved to Chicago, where he attended graduate school at Northwestern University. Four years later, he released his debut solo album, Cat's Cradle, on the Naim label. Two more albums of original material followed on Momentous Records: Carswell (2009) and Time It Is (2014). Tom is also featured on the very first Momentous Records release by the Upstream Jazz Quartet.
